Cultural Deviancy - a Bigger Problem than Guns

Walter Williams has a great column on the gun control diversion. Please read Cultural Deviancy, Not Gun Control. Dr. Williams uses some staggering facts to drive home the point that culture is a much bigger problem than guns. Here are a few samples:
  • Continuing epidemic of black-on-black crime - "between 1976 and 2011, there were 279,384 black murder victims. Though blacks are 13 percent of the nation's population, they account for more than 50 percent of homicide victims."
  • Rifles vs Hammers "...according to FBI data from 2011, there were 323 murders committed with a rifle of any kind but 496 murders committed with a hammer or a club."
  • On the breakdown of the black family - "By the way, the low marriage rate among blacks is relatively new. Census data show that a slightly higher percentage of black adults had married than white adults from 1890 to 1940."
If political leaders really wanted to address pressing problems and root causes, they would use the bully pulpit to challenge cultural deviancy. We won't hear much of that because it calls for personal responsibility. There is no political power or gain in having individuals live more responsibly.
