I often ask why black people would call themselves African American when white people don't say European American. White people say they are American, despite the country from which their ancestors came, even if they still embrace some of the culture. That denotes an identity that is unique to the United States. Black people, those whose families helped build the United States and who have lived here for hundreds of years, are unique as well.
