An Endorsement of a Democrat for Office?Roy Barnes served one term as governor of Georgia and has decided to try again. The people of Georgia, the people who understand commerce, and quality of life, should be open to giving Mr. Barnes a chance over his Republican rivals. Surprised?
First, Roy Barnes is more of a traditional southern Democrat. This makes him far more conservative than half the Republicans in the House and Senate. Goodness just look at Olympia Snow or the chameleon Arlen Specter. As governor, Roy Barnes frequently criticized and took on the public education establishment. That gets kudos from me. Barnes even ended the sick practice of social promotion by requiring students to pass a test before advancing to the next grade.
Perhaps my main reason for considering Barnes is that he has come out forcefully in support of addressing the state's traffic problems. I believe the man would follow through, because he has demonstrated that he's not afraid to take on tough issues. He took on two tough issues that got him canned and replaced by a do-nothing, Dem-turned RINO named Sonny Perdue. The first issue was the aforementioned education mess. The second was changing the racist Conferderate flag.
So, would I support someone over traffic? Is it that serious? Yes, it is. Anyone who has spent time driving through or around Atlanta, knows that the city is choking on traffic. The city of Atlanta is a the economic heart for the entire state of Georgia. People continue to relocate to the city from all parts of the country and the world, yet the gubers in charge of the state legislature and the governor's office are too shortsighted to address the issues that will eventually stop that heart from beating.
Georgia's Republican leadership seems to be made up of far too many small town yahoos who are hostile toward the city (too many darkies, foreigners and transplants I guess). I know what I'm talking about. Georgia's GOP also seems to be too caught up in stupid issues like trying to keep adults from purchasing a bottle of wine on Sunday. These same self-righteous types would have attacked Jesus for turning water to wine on Sunday. These same types will the first go get sloppy drunk at a ball game or a strip club, where somehow you can always have a drink on Sunday, then drive home.
I can't say that I fully endorse Mr. Barnes at this point. I can say that Georgia needs leadership on some serious issues, and if Democrat Roy Barnes can provide that leadership then so be it.
