Australian consumers are looking down the barrel of a likely 60% increase in energy costs when the nation's carbon trading and tax scheme kicks in. The Aussie government had assumed electricity prices for households would rise 12%.

As usual, government meddling has unintended consequences. Now the politicians are having to try and find ways to pay for the impact on low income people. What will that likely mean? More taxes on the people who produce and work.
